About

Dr. LeRoy's research broadly focuses on love and loss, including the complex dynamics of an individual's bodymind, and spirit while processing loss-related experiences. Much of Dr. LeRoy's work focuses on spousal loss, either the loss experienced after the death of a life partner, or loss in the form of "living bereavement," where an individual begins experiencing loss while their loved one is still in their physical, earthly form.

At the University of North Florida, Dr. LeRoy is the Director and Principal Investigator of The North Florida “HEAL” Lab, Studying HEalth Across the Lifespan. Our primary aim is to investigate how various forms of social loss (e.g., the death of a loved one, or caring for a partner with a chronic health condition) impact people’s mental, physical, and spiritual health. In addition to self-report measures, we also collect data to index biomarkers of immunity and parasympathetic nervous system activity, to help capture how loss-related psychological processes impact us “under the skin”. In addition, the HEAL lab develops and implements interventions to help people heal during or after loss.

Dr. LeRoy's team is currently conducting a cross-sectional study with people who are caregiving for a partner living with Alzheimer's or a Related Dementia. In addition, funded by a National Institutes of Health (National Institute on Aging) K01 Career Development Award, Dr. LeRoy is leading the HEAL Lab in developing an app-based writing intervention for caregivers.
