Biography

Asai Asaithambi was born and brought up in Madras, India. He received his Ph.D. in Computer Science at the University of Wisconsin--Madison (UWM) in 1985, a Master of Science in Computer Science (M.S., 1980) from the Indian Institue of Technology-Madras, India, and a Bachelor of Technology (B. Tech., 1977) degree in Electrical Engineering, also from the Indian Institue of Technology-Madras, India. He is currently in the School of Computing at the University of North Florida (UNF) as Professor and Graduate Program Director. He also served as the Director of the UNF School of Computing (SoC) during the period from 2011-2015. He has previously held academic and administrative positions at a variety of higher educational institutions in the U.S., such as Professor/Chair of Computer Science at the University of South Dakota (2004-­2011), Associate Professor/Chair of Computer Science at Saint Louis University (1997-­2004), Associate Professor/Chair of Mathematics and Computer Science at Lincoln University of Pennsylvania (1992-1997), and Assistant/Associate Professor of Mathematics and Computer Science at Mississippi State University (1985-­1992).  His teaching portfolio includes courses ranging from elementary computer programming to advanced courses such as quantum computing and parallel/high-performance computing. He has taught computationally and mathematically intensive courses to diverse groups of traditional and non-traditional students with varying degrees of background preparation in mathematics and computing. He enjoys teaching and takes pride in his students' progress and success in applying critical thinking in all his courses. His research interests are in the areas of artificial intelligence, computational science, and high-­performance computing. He has published a textbook entitled Numerical Analysis: Theory and Practice (1995). He publishes research articles in several refereed journals including Applied Mathematics and Computation, International Journal of Computer Mathematics, International Journal of Computational and Applied Mathematics, Machine Vision, and Pattern Recognition Letters.  During his 37+ years of academic experience in the United States, he has made numerous presentations at regional, national, and international conferences, and directed several doctoral dissertations and Master's theses in computing and mathematics. Additionally, he is interested in broadening the participation of women and other populations currently underrepresented in computing in the United States.
