Christopher A. Janson

Chris Janson earned a B.S. in World Literature from Central Michigan University, a M.A. in Counseling from Central Michigan University, and a Ph.D. in Counselor Education from Kent State University. 

Since joining UNF in 2007, Dr. Janson has been working with other faculty in UNF's SOAR (Supporters of Academic Rigor) School Counseling Program to build a program that trains its students within the context of urban schools.  Dr. Janson teaches two courses, Practicum in School Counseling and Internship in School Counseling, that involve collaborations with two of Duval County's urban turnaround schools, Raines High School and Northwestern Middle School.  Through his experiences teaching these community-based courses, Dr. Janson has realized the need for increased emphasis on deeper and more frequent reflective practices and new approaches for reflection that are more relevant for his students, especially in light of the challenges inherent in working in urban schools. 

He is using his time as a Community Scholar to improve the reflection piece for UNF's SOAR School Counseling Program by replacing traditional, written forms of reflection with digitally-recorded, spoken narrative via digital reflective journals.  He is exploring, piloting and implementing the use of these journals as a way to convey and facilitate dialogic reflection between school counseling students and the DCPS students with whom they are working.  He hopes this will deepen the collective reflective capacity and will of program faculty, students, and community partners.  He has co-written a paper on the subject titled Discursive Digital Reflection: A Method for Enhanced Supervision and Training.
