Personal profile

Biography

I've been a nurse practitioner (NP) for many years and an educator for more than two decades. Early in my career, my mentors taught me that good practitioners were life-long learners who kept abreast of the best clinical practices and were avid consumers of research in their fields. My mentors also helped me appreciate the synergistic relationships among teaching, clinical practice, scholarship and community service. I have used their teachings to guide my professional development.

The fundamental belief permeating my teaching philosophy is a deep sense that nursing education is transformational and that learning not only transforms the lives of students and faculty but also the communities. My goal is to provide an atmosphere of care and support as I respectfully ask students to evaluate concepts, formulate new perspectives and learn to think differently about the world around them. I strive to give students an opportunity to change their perspectives, examine beliefs, reveal attitudes and reformat assumptions to permit an integrative and holistic perspective of nursing practice. I believe my role as a facilitator is grounded in helping students “understand” the experience from a variety of viewpoints and across disciplines. My course/clinical assignments require critical reflection, discourse and action often resulting in a change in beliefs and practice patterns.

As a faculty member, I am encouraged to disseminate innovative, unique or creative scholarly works related to teaching, research and evidence based practice. The following documents my activities related to goal attainment, teaching accomplishments (outcomes) research and service.

Goals: My goals focused on continuously improving my teaching skills, submitting scholarly/creative works for publication and facilitating student publications related to my undergraduate course assignments.

Accomplishments: I have accomplished these goals related to my undergraduate course assignments by presenting papers at national meetings and by co-authoring two online book modules for a pathophysiology textbook.

Goals: My goals focused on continuously improving my teaching skills for graduate courses, submitting scholarly/creative works for publication and facilitating and graduate student publications related to my course assignments.

Accomplishments: I have accomplished these goals related to my graduate course assignments.

Graduate students enrolled in Advanced Practice Nursing 1 and II are required to submit a manuscript for publication in a peer reviewed, advanced nursing practice journal. Since 2007, several publications have resulted from engaging students in this transformational endeavor. Manuscripts by students as sole author or coauthor are listed below.
