Biography

Dr. Timothy J. Groulx is Professor of Music Education and Music Education Area Coordinator at the University of North Florida in Jacksonville, Florida since 2014. A native of Punta Gorda, Florida, he earned his Ph.D. in music education from the University of South Florida in 2010 where he was recipient of the Presidential Fellowship, and earned his Bachelor of Music and Master of Music in Teaching from Oberlin Conservatory in 1999.

He is active in the music education community as an adjudicator, guest conductor, and clinician. Prior to coming to UNF, he taught at the University of Evansville in Evansville, Indiana from 2010-2014. He was teaching fellow at the University of South Florida from 2006-2010, and from 1999-2010 he taught band and orchestra programs in central Ohio and in the Tampa Bay area of Florida.

Dr. Groulx has published research in the Journal of Research in Music Education, Journal of Historical Research in Music Education, Journal of Band Research, Journal of Music Teacher Education, Music Education Research International, and Update!, and serves on the advisory committee for the Music Educators Journal and Research Perspectives in Music Education. He has presented at research and inservice conferences nationally and internationally.  His research interests focus on historical and cultural aspects of Florida's school bands, including the effects of school segregation on historically black high school bands, cultural representation in band literature, and has developed an instrumental music pedagogical method that focuses on student creativity prior to music reading.
