Abstract

The purpose of this qualitative study on women offenders is to more fully understand the problems these individuals face. The question we are aimed at exploring is "Why are women returning to prison?" Possible factors affecting recidivism are investigated. In an under researched area, it is beneficial to get first a broad understanding of the phenomena before proceeding to hypothesis-testing research. Thus, a qualitative methodological approach seems justified because research on this topic is scarce.
