Abstract
After reviewing this chapter, the reader will be able to:
1. Explain the role and professional responsibilities of the medical examiner (ME) in
deaths where child abuse or neglect is suspected.
2. Understand the terminology commonly used by MEs.
3. Understand the differential diagnoses for early childhood fatalities.
4. List the indicators of a possible death due to sudden infant death syndrome
(SIDS).
5. Discuss the elements of a trauma-informed approach to child death investigations,
as well as the role of child death review (CDR) teams.
