Biography

Dr. ElSafty is the 2018-UNF Distinguished Professor, 2023-PCI Distinguished Educator, Fulbright Scholar, and Fulbright Specialist. ElSafty is a professor who served as the Coordinator of the Civil Engineering Program in the College of Computing, Engineering, and Construction at the University of North Florida (UNF). He is the UNF “2018-Distinguished Professor”. He has been selected as the "Chair of the Academic Council" & a member of the Board of Trustees for the “Precast/Prestressed Concrete Institute (PCI) Foundation”. Prior to joining UNF, ElSafty was a founding faculty of the Civil Engineering Department at Florida State University, Panama City campus from 2003 to 2005. He earned his PhD from North Carolina State University (NCSU) in Raleigh and his MBA from UNF. He has had extensive teaching & research experiences at 7 universities. In 2015, he was awarded 2 National Awards by the PCI (2023 DISTINGUISHED EDUCATOR AWARD) & (2015 EDUCATOR OF THE YEAR AWARD), in addition to other awards at national, local, and state levels in Teaching, Research, Leadership, and Service. He's been a (Fulbright U.S. Scholar) conducting research in UAE and a (Fulbright Specialist) in Canada. He's secured as a PI & Co-PI $2.5 million project funds (state, national and Federal) and has led several faculty research teams from 8 universities (LSU, NCSU, Drexel, FSU, Sherbrooke, Northern Ohio, Embry Riddle, and UNF) to publish over 100 journal & conference papers. He's managed the activities of a national grant to establish the 1st PCI-Foundation engineering Design Studio in the US (2009-2015). He's led student teams to win regional and national competitions and has led student groups on Study-Abroad to Ghana, Morocco, Germany & Italy. He's led faculty groups on international academic visits to Turkey, Morocco & Egypt to establish and maintain research initiatives & exchange programs. He was a guest lecturer at Cologne University of Applied Science (Germany) and initiated collaboration in Japan and Italy to establish joint research & exchange program. He's an ABET Program Evaluator (PEV). He's had extensive industrial experience working as a Structural Engineer at a Bridge design firm (Lochner) in Florida and as a Specifications Manager at a British Construction Chemical Company (Fosroc - Burmah Castrol). He's a Licensed/Registered Professional Engineer PE in the State of Florida and P.Eng. in Ontario, Canada. He has thirty years of experience in the Professional Practice of Civil Engineering.
