Biography
I am a Professor of Sociology at the University of North Florida. After growing up in Minnesota, I went on to receive a PhD in Sociology from Indiana University; I also hold degrees from Northwestern University and Brown University. Motivated by my own experiences with social class and being a first-generation college student, my research focuses on the cultural aspects of social class inequality. I work from the assumption that social class inequality reflects not simply the fact that some people have more economic resources than others, but that some people also have more valuable symbolic resources, especially what sociologists call social and cultural capital. By looking at the cultural underpinnings of class inequality, my research asks questions about how people understand, enact, and use social class in their everyday lives. My 2011 book, Inside the College Gates: How Class and Culture Matter in Higher Education, investigates the how social class and first-generation status shape how students navigate the college environment, focusing specifically on their social interactions and extra-curricular involvement. My most recent research focuses on the exclusive resort town of Aspen, Colorado, and how local stakeholders attempt to resolve the seemingly divergent class interests of the people who live and vacation there. These analyses appear in my book Aspen and the American Dream: How One Town Manages Extreme Inequality in the Era of Supergentrification, published by University of California Press (2021). My research has also appeared in Sociological Forum, The Journal of Contemporary Sociology, The International Journal of Qualitative Studies in Education, and Teaching in Higher Education. I have also published three textbooks: Exploring Inequality: A Sociological Approach (2nd edition with Sage), Sociology of Education: A Systematic Approach, with Jeanne Ballantine and Judson Everitt (Routledge), and Schools and Society: A Reader, with Jeanne Ballantine and Joan Spade (Sage).
