Commissioned created for Coppell High School (Coppell, TX) to be premiered at PASIC 2021 in their showcase concert. Winner of the International Percussion Ensemble competition (high school division).
Description:
Conceptually, CAT 5 is based both on the life cycle of hurricanes, and musical elements focused in five. With five performers setup around a shared concert bass drum, cyclical motives are passed around, often in counterclockwise motion (the direction a hurricane spins), while adhering to metric parameters or rhythmic groupings based in patterns of five.
Instrumentation:
1 5.0 marimba, 1 4.6 marimba, 1 4.3 marimba, 2 vibraphones, 3 med-low toms, 1 snare drum, 4+ sets of wind chimes, large concert bass drum mounted w/legs, 2 China cymbals, 1 sizzle cymbal, 2 suspended cymbals, low A & B crotale, brake drum, pieces of resonant metal, 2-3 rain sticks, large tam tam, electronic playback
