Resumen

A university freshman interest group (FIG) comprises 3 lower-division courses linked by a central theme. The goals of the FIGs are to create learning communities, integrate the curriculum, encourage dialogue among students and faculty from diverse disciplines, promote student retention and academic success, and encourage collaborative teaching and research among faculty.1,2 In Jacksonville, Florida, the University of North Florida, with an overall enrollment of 12 000 students, started offering optional FIGs in the fall term of 1999.
