Resumen
The Eartha M.M. White Collection at UNF contains documents, photographs, and other materials related to the life and work of Eartha M. M. White (1876-1974), a key figure in the African American history of Northeast Florida. White was a businesswoman, philanthropist, and civil rights activist whose work continues to impact the lives of communities and individuals in the region. The White Collection was the foundation acquisition of UNF’s Special Collections and remains the most frequently consulted of UNF’s holdings.
The White Collection also creates opportunities for students interested in archives and digital humanities to gain hands-on experience. In recent years, several interns have worked with the collection in Special Collections and University Archives. Several others have interned with Editing the Eartha M.M. White Collection, a digital project that publishes online selected materials from the collection.
In this presentation, Susan Swiatosz, head of Specialty Collections and University Archives, will be joined by two spring 2024 interns. Madalyn Starratt is a history major who is helping to digitize, track, and rehouse materials from the collection. Maya Blackin, an information science major, is the student leader of Editing the Eartha M.M. White Collection, a role in which she is coordinating transcription and digital editing workshops and managing the project’s social media, among other responsibilities. Swiatosz, Starratt, and Blackin will discuss these projects and reflect on the role that on-campus archives like the White Collection can play in the formation of future archives professionals
